A whole house remodel wasn't the original game plan.   The house needed
remodeling, no doubt, but we expected to do that in stages, a little each
year.  The immediate need was a proper kennel with running water, heat
and air and easy to clean cement floors.  Since 1987, we'd kept all our
own dogs in the house and things were getting crowded, not to mention
impractical.  The outdoor kennel we used for the rescued dogs had none
of the above and was ugly to boot.  So what we intended was to build a
pole building with a 15 run kennel, grooming area, workshop for Phil and
storage for equipment.

When we learned, though, that our zoning didn't allow any outbuildings
larger than the house, the plan was scrapped.  When your house is only
800 square feet and the roof is flat, it doesn't allow for much of an
outbuilding.

So we decided to do something I always wanted to do anyway - attach
the kennel right to the house.  There weren't any rules against that and
it was much more convenient!  And while we're at it, we might as well
remodel the house.

This was January of 1998.  We figured we could have a new house
by the end of the year......
